The reigning Emirates Melbourne Cup champion Makybe Diva has been allocated 58kgs in the 2005 renewal of Australia's most famous race. The weight represents a 2.5kg increase on last year when she set a weight-carrying record for a mare with her historic second win.

Racing Victoria Limited Chief Handicapper Greg Carpenter said it was at the bottom end of penalties in recent history. Only four horses have received just 2.5kg when returning to defend their title – Jeune (1995), Tawriffic (1990), What A Nuisance (1986) and Hyperno (1980).

"In the 12 months since last year's win, Makybe Diva (GB) has been transformed from a champion two-miler into a weight-for-age superstar," Carpenter said.

"The 58kg, which represents 2kg above weight-for-age, rates her, the equal of Might and Power, who got 60.5kg in 1998.

"While her successful return last Saturday in the Memsie Stakes had no bearing on the weight she will carry in this year's Cups, it firmly established she is racing in career best form."

Only one mare older than six has won the Melbourne Cup in the past - Acrasia in 1904. Carpenter knows the weight will provide owner Tony Santic and trainer Lee Freedman with plenty to ponder, but added the weight was a challenge, but achievable.

Last year's runner-up Vinnie Roe (IRE) will make his third attempt at winning the Emirates Melbourne Cup and will carry the same weight as 2004 - 58kg.

Topweight for the Emirates Melbourne Cup is the Dale Romans-trained Kitten's Joy (USA), who was given 59kg. Kitten's Joy (USA) is a two-time Group 1 winner in the US and was second in last year's Breeder's Cup over 2400m.

Champion French stayer Westerner (GB) was given 58.5kg. Trained by Elie Lellouche, Westerner (GB) is a five-time Group 1 winner and won his past six starts, which included the Ascot Gold Cup (4000m) at York ahead of Distinction (IRE) and Vinnie Roe (IRE).

Like Makybe Diva (GB), Distinction (IRE)'s success in the past 12 months hasn't been missed by Carpenter. He is up 2.5kg to 56.5kg after his sixth-place finish in the 2004 Emirates Melbourne Cup.

"He is one of the most progressive stayers in the northern hemisphere, which he showed with his run in the Ascot Gold Cup and win in the Group 2 Goodwood Cup," Carpenter said.
