Young Mick coming for the Cup

Young Mick will head to Australia for the Melbourne spring carnival his trainer has confirmed after the English horse won the National Bank of Dubai Cup at Ascot on Friday (BST).

The stayer, who also claimed the major prize in the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot in June, will go for the cream of Australian racing crowns.

"He's going to be entered in the Cox Plate and the Melbourne Cup," trainer George Margarson said after the win.

The four-year-old is now considered a leading chance for the Ebor Handicap at York in August ahead of an Australian campaign.

Jamie Poulton was dreaming of a Melbourne Cup bid with Land 'N Stars after the 16-1 chance upset odds-on Sergeant Cecil in the Addleshaw Goddard Stakes.

Paul Doe timed his challenge to perfection on Land 'N Stars who nailed the favourite in the last 100 yards and held on by a neck.

"He's won £100,000 in Dubai and now this Listed race. One day people will believe me when I say the horse is class," said Poulton.

"This morning I went out and backed him to win three grand."

Of the Flemington idea, for which the winner is a 20-1 shot with Paddy Power, Poulton added: "It's a once in a lifetime chance for me and this horse, but first I want to run him in the Goodwood Cup."

MAKYBE DIVA could bring a fourth Melbourne Cup to Port Lincoln if Racing Victoria includes the city on its pre-Melbourne Cup international promotion circuit.

The unveiling of the Ken Martin Makybe Diva bronze statue on the city's foreshore is planned in time for the Melbourne Cup and Racing Victoria has advised it wants to be involved in the unveiling ceremony as well as promoting the 2006 Melbourne Cup.

The event would be likely to include a community unveiling and the Port Lincoln council would like to see an official function at the Port Lincoln Racing Club.

Irish stayer Yeats is likely to be set for the $5.1m Emirate's Melbourne Cup (3200m) in November after an impressive victory in the Group 1 Ascot Gold Cup (4000m) at Royal Ascot.

Trainer Aiden O'Brien confirmed that the five-year-old's long-term aim is the Melbourne Cup and that he will have another crack at the Irish St Leger, in which he finished fourth last year, to prepare for November.
